« reflecting | Main | In Eldorado... »

I'm writing this from my hotel room in Sonora, Texas.

If you've been following the story on KSL NewsRadio 1160, the FLDS Church appears to have relocated here to Texas.  They're building a big temple one town over in Eldorado.  Rumors have it that Warren Jeffs, the secretive polygamist leader, is now there.

I'll admit it.  I'm nervous.  Not just because I may be covering the apocalypse (everyone I've talked to says the FLDS Church is expected to just dedicate their temple and all go home -- although no one knows for sure) but because I am about to go on the air with a BIG story.

It's a story that's been nearly a year-and-a-half in the making.

If you've been hearing the promotions, I have obtained a series of secret recordings of sermons by FLDS leader Warren Jeffs.  Outside of law enforcement and FLDS members, no one has really heard his voice before.  I got the tapes from multiple sources (I'm not telling who, nice try!) more than a year ago.  Since then, I've been trying to put together this story.  Tracking down people, trying to transcribe the tapes (they're not the greatest quality and when you hear how they were recorded, you'll know why) and getting reaction to them.

Utah's Attorney General seemed surprised that I got them.  His office has copies, as part of an on-going criminal probe into Jeffs' activities.  I interviewed him after playing part of the tapes for him.  I've also talked to anti-polygamy activists and a lawyer for the FLDS Church.

The story airs tomorrow (Tuesday).  I always get nervous before a big story airs.  I don't sleep.  I've thrown up because of nerves.  It happened during Lori Hacking (when we broke a lot of big developments in that case) and it's happening now.

Anyway, you'll want to tune in to hear the tapes and judge for yourself.  We'll also be doing some unique things when I'm on location in Texas covering whatever happens.  KSL NewsRadio 1160 will be "podcasting".  For more information on how to get in on that, you'll want to click here.  I'll also be blogging when I can to give you little behind-the-scenes stuff on what else is going on in Eldorado.

See ya!

In reference to comments I made about another post...this is the sort of thing a reporter should be doing. Ben is outstanding and a shining example of a good reporter.
Also, kudos to Sheryl Worsley for her work in Arizona with the Minutemen. This is the kind of reporting that journalists should be aspiring to.
Sheryl and Ben are great assets to KSL. However, there are other reporters who are way below par (Lance Bandley - I'm looking in your direction) who drag down the whole enterprise.

I haven't seen the story here on KSL.com, but I saw on the another news channel that an FLDS leader is predicting the end of the world tomorrow.

So my question is, if you REALLY knew the end of the world was coming, why would you build yourselves a new temple?

Something seems fishy here...

Maybe they put it all on their credit cards.

Did we really need to know about the puking? Not so much.

I don't know about Lance, but Dave your comments do seem quite rude. Give the guy a break. I haven't heard him but can't imagine he sucks that bad. KSL wouldn't have him on in that case.

As far as the reporting on these other stories this week, you guys are right. KSL has proven again why they're my news station. I moved here from back East and we had nothing even close to the level of KSL 1160. Solid news. Thanks.

Umm, Byran

Don't you like your own station's news?

And why do I so love wearing women's clothing?

Can anyone answer that for me?

I really wish I was a girl.
